Hearths & interiors are cut to size from a very large selection of stones and reproduction stones. GRANITES come in many shade variations from white through gold and red to a full black. Granite is very hard and is supplied with a highly polished surface. Reproduction granites have all the hard wearing properties of real granite but at a slightly reduced price. MARBLES also come in many shade variations but instead of the speckled crystalline appearance of granite have sweeps of colour with veins or bands of other colours. Marbles come with a highly polished surface but are softer than granite and will show scratches. Reproduction marbles come in two forms; agglomerates and conglomerates. They are as equally highly polished as real marble but without the subtlety of shading. Prices vary from slightly less to much less than real marble. SLATES are available with a fine rubbed surface or the naturally split surface. Colours vary from green to black. Hardness varies but generally they are all prone to showing scratchmarks. SANDSTONES vary in colour from a pale buff to a rich gray. Surfaces are available as honed or naturally split. Sandstones are porous so at least hearths should be sealed to reduce staining. They vary greatly in hardness but even if they are scratched this either does not show as much as polished surfaces or can be disguised with a further coat of sealer. Reproduction sandstone is available at a much lower price. LIMESTONES used for this purpose are very similar in appearance to sandstones. Colours vary from white to rich cream. Again they are porous so should be sealed. Our staff are always available to give advice on materials, colours and the different ways of sealing.
